On the road to London: Bruno Senna

In his second year with Mahindra Racing, Bruno Senna has had a much quieter season than his new team mate. Multiple times, the Brazilian has missed out on higher finishes due to poor luck and he heads to London twenty one points behind Nick Heidfeld.

Senna qualified seventh for the first race of the season, but was able to move up to sixth off of the grid. The Brazilian fell back to ninth before the midrace car swap, which ended his race. Senna was kept in the pits for nearly two minutes and dropped to the back of the field. A strong recovery meant he finished thirteenth.

Senna took his first points of the season from a crazy race in Putrajaya. Senna qualified ninth, but struggled in the race when a fault left him unable to hear the team radio, and a glitch temporarily stopped the car on track.

In the second stint, Senna was able to recover when his energy saving plan gave him an advantage over drivers around him. He finished fifth.

Senna made history in Uruguay. After qualifying ninth, the Brazilian made contact with the wall during the race and pitted for Formula E’s first ever tyre change, which put him at the back of the field. At the end of the day, it was brake problems that ended Senna’s race five laps from the chequered flag.

Contact with the wall in qualifying meant Senna qualified eleventh. The Brazilian was able to manage the temperatures in Argentina for a clean race and was able to make up a single place to finish inside the points for the second time this season.

It was another difficult qualifying for Senna, who spun on his qualifying lap, which meant he started the race sixteenth. The Brazilian made up a number of places during the race and crossed the line in eleventh. Disqualification for race winner Lucas di Grassi meant Senna was boosted up another place to take a point from the Mexican race.

Senna qualified tenth for the Long Beach ePrix but good pace during the race helped him progress. The Brazilian finished fifth, helping Mahindra to the team’s best ever result in Formula E.

Senna couldn’t continue the positive momentum in Paris. A mistake with the set up put him on the back foot for qualifying and he started the race in thirteenth. The Brazilian slowly climbed up the field through the race but his progress was hindered by slow moving drivers. He finished ninth.

The day started with Senna’s best ever qualifying in Berlin, when the Brazilian managed to get into the Super Pole shoot out for the first time. He qualified fourth, but was disqualified due to the tyre pressure on his qualifying car and he started the race fifteenth.

The opening stages of the race were difficult for Senna, who had to pit early due to damage to his front wing. He dropped to the back of the field and slowly climbed back up to fifteenth, setting the fastest lap of the race in the process.

Senna heads to London twelfth in the championship and eleven points behind the eleventh place driver. In season one, the Brazilian saw his best ever finish in London and a repeat of that could see him progress in the championship. Senna’s finishes have been fairly inconsistent this season so far though, and decent points in the double header are in no way guaranteed.
