Japan is in line to join the FIA Formula E Championship calendar for the 2018-19 season, with Tokyo and Yokohama both named as potential host cities.

Delegates from the Detsu company, headed by Kim Soonil, were present at yesterday’s Hong Kong ePrix where they were believed to have held meetings with Formula E personnel on the possibility of bring the all-electric series to Japan, while Alejandro Agag visited Yokohama before heading to the season opener.

During the Hong Kong ePrix weekend, former champion Nelson Piquet Jr stated his desire to race in Japan, while Agag spoke positively on the meetings that took place.

“It is important to race in Japan at some stage. We are open to both, but the problem is that the police are very strict for permissions,” the Formula E CEO told Motorsport.com.

“So we hope we can do something for season five at the earliest, we are making progress.”

Motorsport.com also stated that Japanese car manufacturers Honda and Nissan may be poised to enter the sport in the near future, although Agag did not comment when asked the question.

Japan has already been represented in Formula E, with Takuma Sato and Sakon Yamamoto competing in three races between them in the inaugural season, while Team Aguri took part in seasons one and two before being bought by Techeetah, winning the 2015 Buenos Aires ePrix.
