Closed Circuit: Venturi Formula E Team in Hong Kong

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

After a fairly anonymous qualifying for the Venturi drivers, both came back strong during the race to take double points for the team. Formula E rookie Maro Engel was the better of the two drivers, and was the only rookie to finish inside the top ten.

After two top ten finishes for both drivers in the free practice sessions, it must have been hard for the Venturi team to not be just a little bit optimistic during qualifying. But that optimism may have been misplaced. It was a fairly anonymous session for both drivers, with Engel the best of the two with a twelfth place qualifying.

The race was almost just as anonymous for both drivers, though that wouldn’t turn out to be a bad thing. It was a slow climb up through the field, both Stephane Sarrazin and Engel helped by doing an extra lap each in their first stints. Neither driver would be able to break very far into the points, finishing ninth and tenth, but Venturi was one of only three teams to have both drivers finish in the top ten.

Engel proved he was going to be one to watch in his debut Formula E season with an impressive FP1 performance, but he couldn’t translate that to a good spot on the grid in qualifying. The German was out in the last qualifying group and, though he steered clear of any ontrack accidents, he couldn’t manage a repeat of his qualifying time. The last man to cross the line, he took P12.

Immediately during the race, Engel set on improving that position, moving up a place on the opening lap. Progress was slow but on the narrow street track Engel managed to keep his car on the road. The rookie showed superb battery management for a man in his first race weekend, managing to stay out an extra lap on his opening stint. It was a fairly slow pit stop though, and Engel lost a number of places in the pits.

With more battery to play with, Engel restarted his climb up through the order, taking ninth from Loic Duval with only a handful of laps left. He would stay there until the end of the race.

Now in his third year in Formula E, Sarrazin would have been disappointed to qualify behind his rookie team mate. The Frenchman was up in the first qualifying group, qualifying laps in his group, and spent the rest of the session watching his name fall down the order until he eventually qualified fifteenth.

After a penalty for another driver boosted him a place on the grid, Sarrazin fell back to fifteenth on the opening lap, making the job of finishing inside the points even harder. Like his team mate, Sarrazin managed his battery power perfectly as he slowly picked his way up through the order. Before the pit stop sessions, he was twelfth, but would also lose places in the pits in a longer than needed pit stop.

Sarrazin wasted no time recovering the places, though, moving back up to twelfth only one lap after exiting the pits. In a fairly quite race for the Frenchman, he would eventually finish tenth, just inside the points, meaning he’s taken points twelve races in a row.
