Mahindra leading in the race to a sustainable future

Mahindra have become the first Formula E team to be accredited in the FIA Institute’s Sustainability Programme.

The programme was set up to encourage motorsport stakeholders such as teams, championships, and circuits, to enhance their environmental practice, with stakeholders being awarded for taking steps to improve their practices with a focus on environmental management and innovation.

With Formula E already recognised by the programme, it’s not surprising a team from the championship has managed to reach the standards needed to be accredited. More surprising is that Mahindra is the first and have only now been accredited, seeing as the guidelines on how to get the award from the FIA have been available since 2012.

Mahindra have achieved the “Progress Towards Excellence” status, the second benchmark on offer from the FIA. McLaren, the only other race team to have been accredited by the programme, were awarded the highest achievement, the “Achievement of Excellence”, in 2013.

Mahindra’s strength came from its environmental policy and targets, including the aim to be carbon neutral by 2018.

“[We] are honoured to become the very first Formula E team to be accredited by the FIA Institute’s Sustainability Programme,” said Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra. “This is another example of the Mahidnra Group’s deep and growing commitment to sustainability across its business, and an important milestone in our journey toward the Future of Mobility.”

Garry Connelly, the FIA Institute Deputy President and Environmental Ambassador, praised Mahidnra on its achievement, but reminded everyone that there’s still more to be done.

“As ever when it comes to the environment there is always more that we can do, and I encourage the other teams in the all-electric series to follow the example set by Mahindra and sign up to join the programme.”

Mahindra are aiming to progress to the “Achievement of Excellence” level in the future. The team may not be the ones to catch on track, but they seem to be the ones to catch off it. Where sustainability is concerned, at least. With so many organisations saying the environmental principal of the championship brought them to Formula E, the programme is likely something other teams will be looking at in the future.
