Esteban Gutierrez has confirmed that he will be joining the Formula E grid later this year, with a number of races planned including his home event in Mexico City.

The Mexican has a strong junior record to his name, including the GP3 title, but has been looking for a new challenge following the loss of his Haas Formula 1 seat to Kevin Magnussen.

With a solitary point in F1 to his name, Gutierrez will be looking to rebuild his reputation and put in a strong showing when he makes his debut in the all-electric series.

It has not been stated with which team Gutierrez will drive but, according to Motorsport.com, it may well be Loic Duval who will make way at the Faraday Future Dragon Racing team as the Frenchman will have to prioritise his new commitments in DTM.

Speaking at a press conference, Gutierrez said: “Well I’m very happy to be here and to finally make the announcement of my future plans. I feel very grateful to Alejandro and Alberto, which we’ve both known each other for a very long time and now we can work together in this new path.”

“I’ve been always watching and following Formula E, because of my relationship with Alejandro. I have always been following his projects and Formula E being one of them. I have been very impressed at how the category has grown, electric cars are the future of mobility in the cities, so it is a very interesting way of how the innovation is being pushed through the category. I’m delighted to now be a part of it.”

Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag heaped praise onto the series’ newest driver: “I’ve known Esteban since very early on in his career. He’s a great driver, I’ve seen him in GP3, GP2 and Formula 1 obviously. He is a great addition to the championship, we are incredibly excited to welcome him and I think for the Mexico race especially, but I think this could be the start of a very long and successful career in Formula E.”

The 25-year-old will be the second Mexican driver to participate in Formula E, after Salvador Duran competed in both season one and two, and also the eighth former F1 driver.
