Turvey: “I am looking forward to challenging for race wins”

Oliver Turvey is optimistic that his team, NextEV NIO, is due for a strong season and believes race wins are possible.

With Buenos Aires coming up after a long winter break, Turvey is eager to get back into the car and go racing again, encouraged by strong pace shown at the Argentinian track last season.

The Englishman has already impressed so far in the 2016/17 season, with a front row start in Hong Kong the highlight. Despite already showing a massive improvement from season two, the team has continued to develop the car, which in turn has increased Turvey’s confidence in achieving strong results.

What did you learn from racing there last season that you’ll be implementing this year?” style=”text_only” color=”green” open=”true” css_animation=”appear” el_id=”1457462462183-ad45c2b2-e9be”]

“I felt I got to grips with the track quickly, which is one of the faster circuits of the year, and was able to make a strong start to move forwards on the first lap. The management of the energy and temperature is crucial with the long straights and this will be only the second time in Formula E that I have returned to a circuit so I aim to use this experience to get a strong result for the team.”

[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”What is most exciting and most challenging about the Buenos Aires track?” style=”text_only” color=”green” open=”true” css_animation=”appear” el_id=”1457462462432-953e496d-e0ae”]

“The most exciting part of the Buenos Aires track is the first couple of corners with a fast left-hander into a quick chicane that leads on to the main straight, so carrying speed through there is crucial. The most challenging section is braking into the first hairpin as it is bumpy and you approach it at the highest top speed of the season.”

[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Can you give us any insight into how the team has worked to improve energy efficiency ahead of this race?” style=”text_only” color=”green” open=”true” css_animation=”appear” el_id=”1457462462612-90635bfd-853c”]

“It was pleasing to score points for the team in the first two races in Hong Kong and Marrakesh, but since then we have been working hard together to learn and understand areas we can improve. I have spent time working with the engineers on the NextEV NIO Formula E team simulator to help develop the car and understand how to maximise the energy in Buenos Aires.”

[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Despite the season starting in October last year, this is only the third race in the new car. Do you think that this has any effect on the momentum for you as a driver, the team or the viewers?” style=”text_only” color=”green” open=”true” css_animation=”appear” el_id=”1457462462816-456a668d-8c18″]

“As a racing driver, you always want to be racing and, although not the same, we had a virtual race with the Las Vegas eRace in January. The break has given us a chance as a team to learn from the first two races and work on the development in the simulator. I have been training hard and keeping sharp driving on the simulator but I can’t wait to get back in the NextEV NIO Formula E car and race in Buenos Aires for all the fans!”

[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Now you’ve got to grips with the new car, are there any tracks for the remainder of the season that you’re particularly looking forward to? Where do you think it will run especially well?” style=”text_only” color=”green” open=”true” css_animation=”appear” el_id=”1457462463022-821ddfd0-bd90″]

“I am really excited for the whole of the rest of the season. I am proud to be part of the NextEV NIO Formula E Team and to be driving a much stronger car this season so I am looking forward to continuing the development with the team to get on the podium and challenge for race wins. I am really looking forward to racing in Monaco, as I have special memories of winning there on my debut in World Series by Renault, as well as the final two double headers in New York and Montreal.”
