Rowland and Lynn on standby for Mexico

Stéphane Sarrazin, Sébastien Buemi, and José María López are set to race in the Mexico City ePrix next April 1st, but the possibility remains that they will not make it as they will be flying to the Mexican capital the day before the event. Junior stars Oliver Rowland and Alex Lynn have now been put on standby in the eventuality that either driver cannot make it.

The WEC Prologue is set to take place on March 24 and 25 in Italy, whilst Toyota’s Word Endurance programme will be launched a couple of days later. Buemi, Sarrazin, and López will drive for the Japanese manufacturer this season and are set to attend the launch, before flying to Mexico for the fourth round of the Formula E championship.

As the three drivers will arrive in Mexico on race day, Renault e.dams and DS Virgin Racing have drivers due to replace Buemi and López, respectively, on Friday’s shakedown and for the race, in case the drivers cannot make it. DAMS GP2 driver Oliver Rowland is likely to replace the Swiss, making his second appearance in Formula E after replacing Nick Heidfeld in the 2015 Punta del Este ePrix with Mahindra Racing.

“Most probably it will be Oliver Rowland, to do the shakedown and be there in case something happens. He did one race with Mahindra so he knows Formula E. This is most likely what will happen,” told Renault e.dams boss Jean Paul Driot to Motorsport.com.

DS Virgin Racing’s reserve and development driver Alex Lynn is set to driver López’s car during the shakedown session on Friday.

“If there’s a connection missed we might have Alex driving the car,” announced Team Principal Alex Tai when asked whether the 2014 GP3 Champion would be driving Pechito’s car for the race.

Venturi has not yet announced their plans of a possible replacement for Sarrazin, in case the Frenchman cannot make it to the race on time.

Whereas Lynn is likely to drive in the New York double header due to López’s commitments with Toyota in the 6 Hours of Nürburgring, Rowland’s possible drive will only happen in Mexico City, as he will be driving in Silverstone for the DAMS GP2 team at the same time the New York ePrix is being held.
