Esteban Gutierrez will make his Formula E debut at the Mexico City ePrix as he takes the seat of Ma Qing Hua at the Techeetah team with immediate effect.

It had been strongly rumoured in the past weeks that Gutierrez will move to the all-electric series following the loss of his seat with the Haas Formula 1 team, with the news confirmed by the team today.

Ma, who has failed to score in his seven Formula E outings, will now take up the role of reserve driver within the team but may yet be back in action if team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne prioritises his new World Endurance Championship commitments.

Gutierrez believes that he can be competitive with the Techeetah squad and is excited to make his debut at his home ePrix.

“I’m very grateful to join Techeetah, a team with real competitiveness,” said Gutierrez. “After four years of an incredible experience in F1, I’m now taking a step forward into the future of motorsports.

“I am especially excited about my debut race at the Mexico City ePrix. Hopefully I can put on a good show for the passionate home fans.”

Techeetah managing director, Ivan Yim, pledged to give his new driver all the help he needs for his debut event and alluded to new-found stability for the team.

“With the passionate Mexican fans awaiting us in the stadium section, the Techeetah team is highly motivated with its new driver line-up.

“This is a challenging series for drivers with its compressed one-day format, but with stability in the team, we’re ready to take this next step to further build the Techeetah team in its first season.”
