Owned by legendary entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Racing won two races in the inaugural Formula E campaign with Sam Bird at the wheel. Bird returns for a second season, while Frenchman Jean-Éric Vergne joins from Andretti. The team has partnered with the Citroen-owned DS brand to develop their powertrain for the second season of Formula E competition.
Virgin has always been a brand known for innovation and pushing the boundaries of technology, so a move into Formula E is a logical step for the company. They came into F1 in 2009 as a sponsor of the Brawn team, before entering their own team in 2010 and 2011, for which Formula E racers Lucas di Grassi and Jérôme d’Ambrosio raced. The F1 outfit was sold to Marussia in 2012.
The distinctive silver and purple colour scheme from last season remains, with the addition of the DS black, giving the cars a unique look as the team heads into a season in which they will hope to compete for both the drivers’ and teams’ titles, helped by having one of the best driver pairings in the field.
