The only Indian team in the championship, Mahindra Racing entered last year’s inaugural season full of ambition. However, after promising early season form, their pace dropped away towards the latter half of the season, with the team struggling to score points. However, for season 2, the new M2 Electro powertrain looks quick, while a switch on the engineering side from Carlin Motorsport to the same Campos Racing squad that took Nelson Piquet to the drivers’ title with NEXTEV TCR last season should help propel Mahindra back up the grid.
Mahindra is already a big name in India when it comes to the development and manufacture of electric vehicles through its Mahindra Reva company. The outfit owned by Anand Mahindra also run a motorbike racing team, showing the diverse areas that this innovative company is involved in. Now, through Formula E, they hope to make Mahindra a recognised worldwide name.
Last season’s driver pairing was the popular duo of Bruno Senna and Karun Chandhok. Senna finished the season with a 4th place finish in London, denying Sebastien Buemi the championship as he refused to let the Swiss driver past, and will go into this season hoping for a more consistent campaign. Chandhok scored in both of the season opening Asian rounds but struggled thereafter, and has now moved on. Nick Heidfeld joins from Venturi in his place – he will be aiming for his first Formula E win in this campaign.
