The FIA Formula E Championship will race in Mexico City this season, it was announced today. The fifth round of the season will take place in Mexico’s capital on Saturday 12th March 2016.

When the season two schedule was first announced, the March round was listed as “to be announced”, prompting much speculation as to which city would host the event. Mexico City was one of the strongest rumoured venues for the race, and now the series has confirmed that the event will indeed take place at 2.25km altitude in the historic city. The circuit will be a new 2.14km layout that incorporates part of the legendary Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez track, that earlier this month successfully hosted the first Mexican Grand Prix in F1 since 1992.

The Central American nation is on a motorsport high at the moment. High spectator numbers for the F1 race a few weeks ago led to a much acclaimed atmosphere, while both Sergio Pérez and Esteban Gutiérrez will compete in Formula 1 next season. The ePrix in Mexico is the icing on the cake for the nation that also produced Formula E racer Salvador Durán, and high attendance is to be expected with seating for 40,000 spectators planned.

Durán, who competed for Amlin Aguri last season, signed for Trulli Formula E ahead of this campaign. After the Swiss squad missed the first round in Beijing due to customs issues, Durán was replaced ahead of Putrajaya due to a breach of contract, however the squad did not race there either. It remains a possibility that Durán will be back with the team for the race in Mexico.

After the race was confirmed, Durán commented: “Formula E is a great championship that produces fantastic races among top-line drivers and I am sure the Mexican fans are going to love the races. The sound of the cars will be totally new to them, but I know that once they see the quality of the action they are going to be hooked.”

Formula E CEO, Alejandro Agag, added: “We are delighted to be taking Formula E to Mexico City. This is one of the world’s great cities, with a rich heritage and passion for motorsport. I’m confident the fans will create an amazing atmosphere and make the Mexico City ePrix one of the most memorable races of the season.”
