Zürich in pole position to host 2017 Swiss ePrix

Following on from the news that Lugano would not host an ePrix in 2016, it has subsequently come to light that the Swiss city has left the bidding process altogether. Now, Swiss website landbote.ch reports that Zürich is in pole position to snare the race from 2017.

Announcing on Tuesday that Lugano had pulled out of the process, Lugano’s president Marco Borradori stated that the required money could not be raised due to the “difficult political situation in the city”. The Lugano bid team will now share their experience of the process with the Zürich team, entitled “E-Mobil Züri”, working together to bring an ePrix to Switzerland. Zürich is now reported to be the only Swiss city bidding for a race.

The Zürich government is supporting the bid, according to Roger Tognella, member of the Zürich City Council and a founder member of the E-Mobil Züri group. The partnership between the Lugano bid team and E-Mobil Züri should be up and running by the end of this calendar year, with the aim to host the inaugural Swiss ePrix in spring 2017, as part of the category’s third season.

Not only race fans in Switzerland could benefit from the collaboration; links between the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology in Zürich and Lausanne, and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland in Lugano, could also be strengthened, and technology transferred between the cities.
