Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag talked at the climate change summit in Paris yesterday.

Talking at the Green Sports Alliance Panel, Agag discussed the importance of sports for the environment.

“We think that there’s a big role to play for sports in sustainability,” Agag said. “I think it’s almost a duty for people in sports to make sports a force for good and a force for change in the sustainability space. There are a lot more sports fans than environmentalists in the world… so through sports we think we can really have a big influence.”

Formula E’s contribution to climate change is developing electric car technology and making them mainstream.

“We believe all the cars in the world will be electric one day but we have to accelerate that change and we think we can do that through sport.”

Agag also discussed the challenges Formula E faced when the idea for the championship was first proposed, and how its environmentally friendly nature attracted the answers to some of these challenges.

“Once you have an idea that’s strong and linked to sustainability, you find a lot of support along the way,” he said. “Very large corporations which are normally sponsoring other big events like the football world cup or the Olympic Games now are sponsoring Formula E because they see this as an instrument for change and for good.”

The Green Sports Alliance has members in 14 countries. Also speaking on the panel was Neil Beecroft from UEFA, Gretchen Blieler from Protect Our Winters, and Omar Mitchell, from the National Hockey League.
