Aguri to become customer team

Team Aguri will become a customer team next season. They plan to use a powertrain from a rival Formula E team.

Team principal Mark Preston said the team will take the fastest powertrain from those available.

“We’re in discussions,” he told Autosport. “Renault’s certainly seems the fastest.”

Team Aguri are currently running season one technology, which has been working well for them so far this season. They’re sixth in the teams’ championship with driver Antonio Felix Da Costa ninth in the driver’s. Preston believes this competitiveness will not continue into the 2016/17 season, with manufacturers making great gains with the powertrain.

Though the maximum price a team can sell a power train for is €12,000, or lease it for €72,000 a season, additional engineering support comes with additional cost.

Dragon Racing, who are currently using powertrains supplied by Venturi, are making the move to manufacturers, but Team Aguri won’t be following them due to costs. Developing a powertrain would be too pricey for the team, unless…

“We weren’t ready,” Preston said. “But if an OEM came along we would talk about it.”

The team has until the end of March to make a decision as to where it will take its custom, but could make that choice sooner.

“We probably have to do something after Buenos Aires.”
