Jacques Villeneuve has left the Venturi Formula E team by mutual consent following a pointless opening to the 2016/17 season, according to a report from Motorsport.com.

Villeneuve, who joined the Monegasque team in place of Nick Heidfeld at the beginning of the season, was expected to perform well due to his extensive experience, but the Canadian was only able to muster a best position of 11th, which he achieved at the second round of the championship in Putrajaya.

At the opening round in Beijing, the 1997 Formula 1 champion was forced to retire after a collision with Antonio Felix da Costa, while in Punta del Este a crash in qualifying left the Canadian on the sidelines for the race.

Motorsport.com believes a replacement for Villeneuve is set to be announced later today.
