ABT still not a threat to e.dams

It was Lucas Di Grassi’s tenth trophy in fifteen races, but ABT still have work to do if they want to take the title challenge to e.dams.

Sebastien Buemi’s spin in qualifying left the door wide open for Di Grassi to take his first pole of the season, but the Brazilian failed to qualify inside the top five to challenge in the Super Pole round.

Still, Di Grassi put the bad session behind him. The Brazilian was able to storm through the pack and challenge for the win in his “home” race. Unfortunately for him, the ABT car didn’t have enough energy when he really needed it, though.

The safety car allowed Buemi to catch up and the championship leader made to overtake Di Grassi. Di Grassi had won the FanBoost earlier in the race, but there wasn’t enough energy in the car to use it, and Buemi passed him, relegating him to the third step of the podium.

The clear gap to the e.dams team made the third place a little less sweet.

“A podium is always a success, about which I’m pleased, but we all noticed clearly today that we must work hard if we want to keep our hopes alive in the title battle with Renault,” Di Grassi said.

Teammate Daniel Abt was also missing the pace in Buenos Aires. Starting alongside Di Grassi, Abt moved back through the pack, and a rough pit stop cost the German further. Abt finished the race in thirteenth.

“We weren’t strong enough today to seriously threaten Renault. We have to be honest with ourselves,” said Hans-Jürgen Abt. “But we’ve shown that we can and will fight. We have nothing against the role of underdog and will take every chance no matter how small.”

ABT will head to Mexico second in the championship behind Renault e.dams, with Di Grassi second in the individual standings.
