FP2 rich in variety – whetting the fans’ appetite

An exiting Free Practice 2 session in Mexico City with Sebastien Buemi on top in the end whets the fans’ appetite for the qualifying and the race ahead.

First on track were Renault e.Dams drivers Nicolas Prost and Sebastien Buemi who quickly established themselves on top of the field as the other drivers were joining them on track. Especially Mahindra Racing driver Nick Heidfeld was able to show some good pace in the early stages of the session while local hero Salvador Duran once again had to fight off his own demons. The Mexican stranded on track and therefore had to retire from FP2 early, causing the only red flag of the session.

With 12 minutes to go, it was the Abt Schaeffler Audi Sport duo Lucas di Grassi and Daniel Abt who took the lead from the Renault e.Dams’. Abt quickly degraded his Brazilian team mate to P2 as the German put in the fastest lap seen so far this weekend. Behind the Abt Schaeffler Audi Sport duo the Dragon Racing drivers also showed some good pace as well as Mike Conway and Oliver Turvey. Jean-Eric Vergne also proved that DS Virgin Racing will be another team to watch later on in qualifying and the race but team mater Sam Bird was not quite as lucky as the Frenchman. The winner of the Buenos Aires ePrix made contact with one of the soft barriers and damaged his rear following a big lock-up going into the chicane.

Only with a few minutes left, current championship leader Buemi went out again to put in his full-power lap. What everybody feared once again became reality as the Swiss driver beat Abt by four tenths of a second and therefore the Renault e.Dams driver goes into qualifying and the race as the clear favourite for the top positions. Nevertheless, FP2 showed that the drivers are closer together than so far this season so the fans can look forward to an eventful qualifying session and another breathtaking race later on during the day.
