History repeats itself: di Grassi disqualified, d’Ambrosio wins

The inaugural Mexico ePrix showed the countless Formula E fans that the saying “History repeats itself” is also true in the all-electric racing series. Race winner Lucas di Grassi has been disqualified thus making Jerome d’Ambrosio the new victorious driver thus reminding everyone of the Berlin ePrix 2015.

The stewards have been busy after the dramatic Mexico ePrix as the drama did not end when all drivers crossed the finish line. Race winner and new championship leader Lucas di Grassi (Abt Schaeffler Audi Sport) has been disqualified due to his car being underweight. Following his disqualification, Dragon Racing driver Jerome d’Ambrosio is the new driver on top of the result list.

Nevertheless, there have also been some consequences for the Belgian: As he cut the chicane during his fastest lap, the time has been cancelled. D’Ambrosio’s 1.04.532 has also been the fastest lap of the race, so he loses the two additional points. Said points now go to Nicolas Prost (Renault e.Dams). D’Ambrosio’s team mate Loic Duval also had to deal with some post-race trouble as the stewards imposed a 15-second penalty for missing the third chicane three times and ignoring the following warning. Due to di Grassi’s disqualification, he remains in P4 nevertheless.

The teams still have the chance to appeal the stewards decisions. Should the penalties stay in place, di Grassi loses his newly gained championship lead. Buemi would lead with 98 points ahead of di Grassi (76 points) and Bird (60 points).

Update: Abt Scheffler Audi Sport confirmed di Grassi’s disqualification on twitter. Race result stands as said. The team is not sure what caused the issue but they are afraid the car would stay in Mexico until the hearing so their is the possibility of missing the Long Beach ePrix.
