The 2016 Long Beach ePrix wasn’t a race like any other for Mahindra Racing: the Indian team had their long-awaited best result ever, with Nick Heidfeld finishing fourth and Bruno Senna fifth.

Free practice sessions did not seem to generate much hope for the team, with both drivers finishing almost at the bottom of the standings in FP1, and Senna doing a slightly better job in FP2. With these results, both drivers went to qualifying where they got better results.

Da Costa’s disqualification was a plus for the team and thanks to it, Senna would start in P10 and Heidfeld in P4.

Both cars had good pace during the race; Heidfeld remained fourth for most of the race, despite his trials to overtake using his FanBoost and Senna moved up to fifth position, including a strong battle with DS Virgin Racing’s Sam Bird. Crossing the finish line in those positions meant Mahindra Racing had had their best joint result so far in Formula E.

A very happy Dilbagh Gill, Mahindra’s Team Principal, said “Today I can say we achieved exactly what we planned to do. We have pushed to develop the car and regain the ground we lost in some recent races”.

Nick Heidfeld, who previously scored Mahindra’s first podium ever back in Beijing 2015, expressed “I am happy that we scored the best finish in the Team’s history today. Most importantly, I think we are progressing well”.

Meanwhile, a cheerful Bruno Senna said “The theme of the day is progress. We have gained momentum since Buenos Aires and the results speak for themselves. We were very efficient and this allowed us to stick to our strategy and control our race”.

Mahindra has more points so far this season than at the end of Season 1. The team hopes to keep improving and showing better results at the next Formula E race in Paris.
