The judicial review that had put the Formula E finale at Battersea Park under threat has been withdrawn. It has now been confirmed that the 2016 London ePrix will take place as planned, but the series will not return to Battersea in 2017.

The two races at the end of the 2015/16 season will go ahead as planned, it was announced yesterday (Monday) in a joint statement between Battersea Park Action Group (BPAG) and Formula E. The statement read: “James Jackson supported by the Battersea Park Action Group is pleased to now announce that a satisfactory agreement has been reached over the future use of Battersea Park. (…) James Jackson will now withdraw his Judicial Review action with his costs to date being met. The Championship this year will go ahead but further consideration will be given to future years.

“As required under the planning conditions for this year’s event, the park will be reinstated by Formula E to its original pre-March 2015 condition.”

It was confirmed today (Tuesday) in a Wandsworth Council statement that a deal has been struck with Formula E whereby this year’s races in the park are the last ones, despite a contract running until 2017. Formula E will pay compensation for loss of income in 2017, with the total amount of money received by the council for the 2015 and 2016 events reaching a total of £2.85 million.

In the Wandsworth Council statement, Councillor James Cook also confirmed that Formula E “will be seeking alternative locations. Our understanding is that this now includes the possibility of a street circuit in central London, which has always been their preferred option but was not previously possible.”

The final races in Battersea Park will be held on July 2 and July 3. Lucas di Grassi leads Sebastien Buemi by one point going into the double header. Fans can look forward to a thrilling season finale, as last season’s event proved that changing weather conditions and an unforgiving track can lead to unforgettable action.
