The WTCC double-champion José-María López has completed his first test for DS Virgin Racing after the team announced him as Sam Bird’s partner for Season 3. In Guadix, he went out on track in his new Formula E driver role for the first time.

José-María López has experienced his first day as a DS Virgin Racing driver following his announcement from last week to join the all-electric Formula E in season 3, in which he will partner Sam Bird. The Argentine current WTCC title-holder has spent the whole Wednesday testing at Guadix Circuit in Granada, Spain to start off his electric adventure with his new team and to grasp the challenge that is Formula E.

Getting familiar with the team should not present a huge challenge to “Pechito” as DS Virgin Racing includes a handful of people who already worked alongside López during his time in the WTCC for Citroën, where he won the World Championship in each of the past two seasons. Speaking to AutoBild Spain after completing his first Formula E test, the current leader in the WTCC said:

“The Formula E car is a bit heavier on the rear than a GP2 car. Also with an electric car, you can feel every noise it makes. The biggest challenge for me will be to adapt to this kind of racing, although the single-seater driving feeling is awesome. I really like to feel the wind in my face!”

Asked about his aims for his first season in Formula E, he added: “Bird has lots of experience, so I have no excuses: I will have to be as fast as possible. I hope to perform progressively well, without many lows and highs. It would be great to win an ePrix in my first season.”
