Abt quickest again in morning session

After topping the times yesterday afternoon, Daniel Abt once again went quickest of all in changeable conditions at Donington Park, ahead of Nick Heidfeld and Nico Prost.

Following overnight rain, a greasy track in the first hour made for some tentative running with no one coming near the times set previously. An early red flag was brought out as Jose Maria Lopez beached his DS Virgin machine into the gravel, before a secondly one was prematurely thrown as an excursion for another driver, who was not identified on the timing screens, caused the session to be stopped. However, the driver was able to continue after the red flag was brought out, with the session going green again once the recovery vehicle had returned.

As the track dried out the times started to tumble, with drivers getting to within a second of the lap record set by Jean-Eric Vergne yesterday morning. A number of drivers swapped the lead throughout the morning, with Felix Rosenqvist, Nick Heidfeld, Harry Tincknell, Sam Bird and Jerome d’Ambrosio, amongst others, all taking turns at the top of the standings.

With a late quick lap, it was Abt who once again headed the field with a 1:30.073, only four tenths away from the lap record. Heidfeld continued the promising pace shown by Mahindra, while Prost set the third fastest lap before beaching his Renault e.dams into the gravel, ending the morning session with the ensuing red flag.

Two drivers had their first laps in a Formula E car, as Dean Stoneman tested for NextEV and Harry Tincknell had a go in the Jaguar. Between them they racked up a respectable 34 laps, with Stoneman taking the 15th fastest time ahead of Tincknell in 16th, the latter having headed the field earlier in the day.

There appeared to be further problems for the Dragon Racing car of Loic Duval, who was only able to complete seven laps with a best time of 1:43.990, 13.9s off the pace of Abt.

The action will resume at 14:00 local time.
