Vergne fastest on drying track

Jean-Eric Vergne topped the timing sheets once again as the Frenchman trumped the rest of the field on a drying track to finish the opening three day test ahead of his rivals.

After rain earlier in the day, tentative laps from the drivers saw little trouble being given to the lap record set by Vergne yesterday. With a number of drivers constantly improving Ma Qing Hua, Antonio Felix da Costa, Sebastien Buemi and Felix Rosenqvist all had brief spells in the P1 spot before Vergne wrestled his Techeetah vehicle ahead of the pack.

The tumbling lap times meant that the order never stayed the same throughout the final ten minutes, with a late surge from Maro Engel putting him into second place ahead of Buemi and Sam Bird.

Stephane Sarrazin had a troubled afternoon, only being able to set four laps before being confined to the garage with electronic issues. The Frenchman was able to get some late running in and did a solid job to go fifth fastest.

It was another frustrating day for Loic Duval in the Dragon car, who was unable to get in any competitive running and ended the same at the bottom of the pile, 9.8s off the pace. His team mate Jerome d’Ambrosio had a more positive day to take the tenth fastest time.

The only absentee from the session was Robin Frijns, who left just before lunchtime to head to Budapest for the next round of the Blancpain Series.

The second and final three day test will be at Donington Park once again, taking place on September 5-7.
