WEC clash remains as date won’t be changed

The World Endurance Championship won’t change the date of next year’s 6 hours of Nürburgring, as the alternative date may not be available. The July race will clash with the Formula E’s New York double header, and could be a deciding factor in the championship battle.

Time has run out for Gerard Neveu, WEC series boss, who had been willing to change the date of the German round of the endurance championship, but had been waiting on a guarantee from Formula One organisers. It had been intended to move the date of the Nürburgring race to July 23rd, just a week before Formula One’s German Grand Prix. Neveu wanted confirmation that Formula One race wouldn’t be brought forward a week, but that never came, and now the Nürburgring wants a decision.

[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]“We do not have the guarantee that July 23rd is available, so we stay on July 16th,” Neveu told reporters. “We had to take a decision with the Nurburgring and the decision is that the WEC race will happen on July 16th. We don’t have a choice – the Nurburgring is arranging its schedule and renting its track for the other weekends.”[/perfectpullquote]

With many Formula E drivers also racing in the endurance championship, this will pose a problem for many. Current champion Sebastien Buemi has already confirmed he’ll miss the double header to race in WEC. With the double header being so late in the championship, this could be a deciding factor in the title fight.

Other drivers are still to confirm their intentions for the July weekend.
