Zurich in line for future ePrix

The Swiss city of Zurich is being lined up for a future ePrix, with the country having looked to join the calendar since Formula E’s inception.

Switzerland has had a motor racing ban in place since 1955, following the tragic Le Mans disaster that claimed the lives of over 80 spectators. The ban was relaxed in 2015 to accommodate for Formula E.

Following this, plans were put in place for Lugano to host an ePrix, but were stalled when the required €10m activation fee was not reached.

Formula E title sponsor Julius Baer Group is located in Zurich with Marco Parroni, Head Global Sponsoring & Managing Director SA, stating that the city will “be ready to support, in a strong way if necessary, a Swiss ePrix.”

Parroni, speaking to Motorsport.com, believes that the location is ideal to the message of Formula E.

“We believe that the Swiss Confederation remains one of the most innovative economies in the world, and is an ideal setting for a high-level event like an ePrix,” he said.

“We definitely have an interest in supporting one, and we believe they can exploit such sponsorship within our market to make one happen. The event must be first be discussed, after which we can comment appropriately or worry about further commitments and confirmation.”

If a final agreement is confirmed, it will give reigning Formula E champion Sebastien Buemi a home ePrix, while the country has also been previously represented by Simona de Silvestro, Fabio Leimer and Alex Fontana.
