Buemi pleased to take victory following race one exclusion

Championship leader Sebastien Buemi got his quest for a second title back on track with victory in race two at the Tempelhof Airport, having been awarded victory after crossing the line second.

The Swiss driver chased down pole sitter Felix Rosenqvist for the lead of the Berlin ePrix, staying behind through the pit stop phase where the Mahindra Racing driver fell victim of a team error and was handed a ten second time penalty.

Buemi held back after learning of the Swede’s penalty, but believes he had the pace to challenge for victory on the road but is satisfied with the strongest result possible following his exclusion from yesterday’s race.

“Of course [I could have overtaken him], on the other hand when I saw he was going to get the penalty I didn’t put any pressure on him,” said the Renault e.dams driver.

“I wanted to let some air exist and I knew that he would be able to push and finish ten seconds ahead of Lucas, so I didn’t really put him under pressure. I believe I could have attacked him but I don’t know if I would have overtaken him.

“It feels a bit strange to cross the line second and take the win, but after the disqualification yesterday I don’t really care how I win, I just want to win.”

Buemi is set to miss the next event in New York due to his commitments to Toyota Gazoo Racing in the World Endurance Championship, and another double-header round means the championship leader could lose a potential 58 points.

He hopes to be able to lose as little advantage as possible, but explained that the final decision lies with Toyota.

“The priority goes to Toyota, so if they don’t want me to race [in Formula E] then I won’t race. I really hope they will allow me to have a special meeting and maybe do New York on the Saturday and Nurburgring on the Sunday, but until then I am not there.”
