Closed Circuit: Andretti Formula E in Montreal

Bittersweet season finale for the Andretti Formula E squad: While Robin Frijns was able to select four more points for the team on Saturday, the final race of the season saw them crossing the finish line without any points.

Saturday

The second-last race of the third FIA Formula E season ended rather successful for the American Andretti Formula E squad as they were able to collect four points in total due to Robin Frijns finishing in P8. The team did benefit from Sebastien Buemi’s (Renault e.dams) disqualification, but with all the joy thanks to Frijns, Antonio Felix da Costa did not have a similarly successful race. Two incidents late in the race meant he dropped to P15 which was transformed into a P14-finish due to Buemi’s exclusion from the race.

Sunday

After P15 and P16 in qualifying, the two Andretti Formula E drivers were planning to attack to end the season on a high. Nevertheless, a tumultuous start and an incident filled race meant neither Frijns nor da Costa were able to fight for points. They ultimately crossed the finish line in P13 and P15 respectively.

[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]“We came to Montreal with a goal of building on the points-scoring positions that we got in New York and again, Robin got another ninth place. We’ve sort of etched our name on that position on the results board. It’s important going into the last races of the season that we maintain the consistent finishes that we’ve seen over the last couple of events. We’re trying to hold onto that seventh place in the championship. The early running on the track didn’t go as we expected it to which made qualifying a bit of a disappointment for both drivers. Tough race again for Antonio, contact with another car on two occasions dropped him from what potentially could have been a second points finish for us, to out of contention. We have some work to do tonight to look at what we learned today. The idea is to come back stronger tomorrow and build on the result from today.”[/perfectpullquote]

Sunday

[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]“We came to Montreal with a principle goal of retaining our position within the team’s championship and that has been achieved, so we are pleased with that. Obviously seventh place is not really where we wish to finish but we are pleased we didn’t fall further behind. As far as Race 2 here in Montreal goes, it was slightly disappointing to finish outside of the points. We had a reasonably competitive race yesterday and we were hopeful that would continue today. For some reason, neither driver was able to make the progress during the race that we had seen previously and we finished the season on a little bit of a low note. For us, Season 4 starts tomorrow. We’ve got a lot of work to be done, a lot of testing is planned, and we’re looking forward to accomplishing that successfully and seeing results with improved performance at the next all-team test in Valencia in October. I’m sure it will only be a few days before we will be excited for Season 4 and meeting up again in Hong Kong. On a final note, I would just like to say thank you to all the fans that showed up over the last two days in Montreal. As always, the Canadian fans have been very hospitable and it’s a great crowd to race in front of. We look forward to coming back next year.”[/perfectpullquote]

Saturday

Antonio Felix da Costa showed a strong performance on Saturday which sadly went unnoticed. In qualifying, the Portuguese qualified P15 and was trying to bring himself into a good position to fight for the lower point-positions with an excellent battery management. Nevertheless, the full course yellow meant all his energy saving would be indifferent and he changed his car on lap 14. He was then able to follow teammate Robin Frijns and they worked their way through the field together. Unfortunately, two incidents late in the race caused da Costa to spin and make contact with other cars so he ultimately finished in P15.

Sunday

Just like on Saturday, da Costa put his car on P15 on the grid. He managed to make up a few positions during the start but due to problems with his first car and a tyre-issue, he struggled to keep up until he was able to jump into his second car. Even though he suddenly had more performance, he had to keep an eye one his energy usage as he had decided to stop one lap earlier than his direct opponents. In the end, the Portuguese finished the final race of Formula E’s third season on P15.

Saturday

[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]“I had a good start and made up some positions. I was doing well on energy but when the full course yellow came, it actually brought everyone back on the same page so all the hard work we did in the beginning of the race was for nothing. We were still running close to the points and looking okay but we got tapped by Nelson [Piquet Jr.] and that was the end of the race. After that I rejoined the group but there wasn’t much more I could do from there. I think there’s a few things the MS Amlin Andretti team needs to look into tomorrow, it’s another day. If we can improve the car a little bit in qualifying we can make the day easier.”[/perfectpullquote]

Sunday

[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]“We had a good start again, a good first lap making up a few positions but we had no performance at all in the first car. In the first stint I was really struggling to make the tires work so I was dropping back gradually, not really fighting anyone. I tried to look after my energy and create a Plan B but the lack of performance really didn’t help ups, so, we decided to box a lap early and get in the other car which had a lot more performance. We were able to then regain a bit of the ground we had lost but you are always playing catchup when you box a lap early. You have to save a bit more energy than the people around you. It was a tough race for the MS Amlin Andretti team today but I’m glad we kept seventh in the championship. We need to regroup with the guys and I’m looking forward to having some time off. We will start again in Season 4.”[/perfectpullquote]

Saturday

Robin Frijns started into the first Montreal ePrix from P13 and had high hopes for another point finish. During the start, he made slight contact with Sebastien Buemi (Renault e.dams) but was able to continue his race nevertheless. He then showed a fierce comeback race and actually found himself within a shot for points when the race was coming to an end. He crossed the finish line in P9 but later inherited P8 due to Buemi being disqualified for being underweight. The Dutch racer was thus able to add four more points to his overall championship score.

Sunday

Sunday saw Frijns starting right behind his teammate Antonio Felix da Costa from P16. Unfortunately, a start right in front of him caused him to drop to the back of the field. He then tried to fight his way through the field which he managed to do quite well. The last few laps were eventful for Frijns as he made contact with Loic Duval (Faraday Future Dragon Racing). Nevertheless, the Dutch Andretti Formula E driver was able to keep his cool but was not able to finish any higher than P13 in the end.

Saturday

[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]“I think today was alright. We had good pace and the energy consumption was really good. The MS Amlin Andretti team looked good. It was a bit of a shame that the safety car came out because we had more energy to burn than anyone in front of us. I think we could have finished seventh or eighth if the safety car didn’t come out but ninth and points is good for the team. Let’s hope for another one tomorrow.”[/perfectpullquote]

Sunday

[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]“We had a difficult start with the crash in front of me, which I couldn’t really avoid, so I ended up in the back of the field. I was managing my energy quite well and was hoping something would happen at the end of the race. I went a lap further than 3/4 of the field which was good. In the second car I did the same thing, I tried to save for the last few laps but it didn’t work out. I had some energy left at the end but I couldn’t really use it. I touched Duval at one point which was my mistake. In the end, the MS Amlin Andretti team didn’t score points which is a shame.”[/perfectpullquote]
