Closed Circuit: Panasonic Jaguar Racing in Montreal

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

A season finale with mixed emotions: While Saturday saw Panasonic Jaguar Racing score valuable points with Mitch Evans and also securing the team’s best ever qualifying, Sunday unfortunately showed how quickly fate takes an about-turn.

Saturday

It has been a very mixed bag for newcomers Panasonic Jaguar Racing this year – from a testing-based hype train the team themselves desperately tried to put the brakes on, to initial external disappointment, to realistic development across the year. To start hitting the points consistently in the second half was excellent progress – and something they carried into this race, with another top-ten finish for Mitch Evans. A steep learning curve of a year, ending on a course not short on elevation changes, achieving their best-ever qualifying performance (Evans 7th, Adam Carroll 8th) is not to be sniffed at in terms of continuous improvement, even as the focus shifts to Season 4, despite a failure meaning Carroll’s second car took him out of the race.

Sunday

Sunday could not continue the pace, with a reversal of qualifying fortunes to 18th for Evans and 20th for Carroll, who despite both improving six places in the race could not get into the points. Incident-strewn and with fights bigger than those scrapping for the final few points of the season, it was not a race perfectly aligned for a heroic finish. But Panasonic Jaguar Racing can definitely take a steady improvement from this year and although neither driver appears to be signed for Season 4 yet, Evans’ 14th placing in the drivers’ championship is a good sign, alongside a bottom-of-table but fairly well-adorned with points finish for them in the teams championship.

Saturday

[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]“We had a strong qualifying performance today with Mitch and Adam earning their best ever qualifying result. Mitch gained two positions right out of the gate and both drivers raced hard right until the full course yellow on lap 16. As a team, we decided to split the strategy when the full course yellow came into effect and this gave us a great advantage to pit Mitch early. We were not so fortunate with Adam, and he lost a number of positions. Overall, we have shown our most competitive performance to date in terms of one lap pace but we couldn’t fully capitalise on our potential today, but we’re looking forward to racing hard again tomorrow.”[/perfectpullquote]

Sunday

[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]“This weekend has been tough for us and, to be honest, we would have liked to have been further up the grid with a bigger haul of points as we end our first season. However, our expectations have always been in check and we don’t underestimate how competitive this series is. We have learnt a huge amount in our first season in Formula E and we have really enjoyed the challenge of Jaguar’s first year of all-electric street racing. Being part of this innovative series has been rewarding and with the arrival of more manufacturers since our decision to join, we feel proud to be a part of it. Formula E was uncharted waters for us, and our competitiveness in our first season was always going to be restricted. We only had just three months to design, build and homologate our car, with no room to develop or test during the season, under the rules. We believe there is no harder championship to join as brand new team.”[/perfectpullquote]

[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]“We’re excited about our potential for next season. All we have learnt has gone into the design, build and development of our new Jaguar I-TYPE. Testing is going well and our focus is now very much on season four and beyond. We are looking forward to regularly competing for points next season. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been a part of the Panasonic Jaguar Racing family, as we brought the Jaguar name back to the race track. Whether you cheered for us from the factory, from the stands or from the sofa, we are thankful to have such strong support. See you in Hong Kong.”[/perfectpullquote]

Saturday

Adam Carroll has been dogged by extraordinarily bad luck this season – repeated car failures, entangled in crashes that were nothing to do with him and out-scored by his luckier teammate, this weekend was not to turn it around. Carroll had initially out-qualified and out-performed Mitch Evans but Saturday saw the continuation of a trend as he qualified 8th, behind Evans although still one of his own best performances. His race pace was decent, despite some delaying incidents but unidentified failures on the second car took him out of it for a 17th place finish, having finished enough to classify.

Sunday

Qualifying 20th is no one’s favourite position and despite Nico Prost’s (Renault e.dams) penalties preventing Carroll technically being dead last on the grid, bar some extraordinary luck he was almost out of the race before it started. Caught in an early incident between Loic Duval (Faraday Future Dragon Racing) and Stephane Sarrazin (TECHEETAH), unable to get round the spun Techeetah, it was an impressive recovery to press on to 14th. Psychologically, driving from the back is hard and Carroll’s ability to keep his head this year has to be lauded – with neither driver apparently signed for next year, his chances may not look as obviously strong as Evans’ but given the package provided, Carroll has put in some impressive recoveries over the past year, his results rarely reflecting the skill shown.

Saturday

[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]“It was a mixed day on my side of the garage. This morning, we had our best ever qualifying result and the car felt great. This is such an exciting circuit. Unfortunately, we had a tough race and we were caught out during the full course yellow. Sunday

[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]“We knew that it would be difficult today with a longer race distance and such an aggressive energy target. I came from P19 to P14, gaining a number of positions in the race. It was great to bring both cars home again and we had some really fun racing along the way. This first season was always going to be a challenge for us, in our learning year. This is one of the most competitive championships in the world and it’s the place to be for a team like us that is racing to innovate. If any racer or manufacturer wants to prove themselves, the Formula E championship is the place to do it.”[/perfectpullquote]

Saturday

A season finale is driver point-proving time and Mitch Evans once again showed he has the skills and mindset to succeed in Formula E, delivering a 7th place in qualifying and retaining it for the race. He managed to steer clear of on-track incidents (something he has proved fairly adept at, in the second half of this season, to his benefit) and another determined showing from the Kiwi can only improve his chances of retaining a drive next year, taking what turned out to be the last points of the season for Panasonic Jaguar Racing.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Sunday

If nothing else, this weekend has sharply demonstrated the speed at which fortunes change in Formula E and slipping from qualifying 7th to 18th, although barely noticeable behind the theatrics at the top of the tables, is a bit of a blow. Evans still gave it a good race, gaining six places in total.
