Off the back of a double podium in New York, Techeetah came to the season finale looking to continue their strong form and finish the season on a high. Ultimately, the team came away with the best possible finish on Sunday, their maiden victory.

Saturday

While Stephane Sarrazin made it through into Super Pole and went on to qualify third, Jean-Eric Vergne missed the cut for the top five by 0.159s and set the sixth fastest time. With Sebastien Buemi (Renault e.dams) taking a grid drop, both drivers moved up one place on the grid. Sarrazin held onto second behind pole-sitter Lucas di Grassi (ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport) for the opening stint, while Vergne made a move for fourth on Mitch Evans on lap seven before leap-frogging up to second following the car swaps. Behind the Frenchman, compatriot and team-mate Sarrazin dropped to third and held station despite a hard-charging Buemi gunning for the podium and as many points as possible to his title challenge. The 41-year-old held on and gave Techeetah their second double podium of the season.

Qualifying for the final day saw the roles reversed as this time Vergne made it through to Super Pole while Sarrazin missed out, this time taking the tenth fastest time, 0.598s from the cut for the top five. Vergne, starting from third, beat the DS Virgin Racing of Sam Bird off the line and took second around the outside of turn one, while Sarrazin was caught out by the accordion effect and tipped into a spin by the ABT Schaeffler of Daniel Abt. While Sarrazin made the most of his Renault powertrain to rise through the order and bring hom e a respectable seventh place finish, Vergne chased down race leader Felix Rosenqvist (Mahindra Racing) and eventually made the move on lap 29 that would see him take his and the team’s maiden Formula E victory.

After narrowly missing the cut for Super Pole, Jean-Eric Vergne did everything in his power to move through the order, passing Evans for fourth before making some serious moves up to second through the car swap phase of the race, with only Lucas di Grassi (ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport) ahead on the road. The Frenchman closed the gap and entertained the thought of making a move, but ultimately fell short and crossed the line 0.350s behind his Brazilian rival, while team-mate Stephane Sarrazin came home in third for a second double podium of the season.

Sunday

Third place in qualifying showed the potential pace of the French driver as he looked to finish his season on a high. Beating Sam Bird (DS Virgin Racing) to second place at turn one, Jean- Eric Vergne then set off after Felix Rosenqvist (Mahindra Racing) but was unable to get close enough in the first stint and entered the pits in second for his car change. Rosenqvist maintained the lead into the second stint, but Vergne piled on the pressure and made it through to the lead on lap 29, going on to take his maiden victory at his 31st attempt with with it fifth place in the driver’s championship. Fifth place in the driver’s championship confirmed, with one victory and an additional four podiums giving the Frenchman his best season to date in the all-electric series.

An excellent job in qualifying allowed Stephane Sarrazin to line up on the front row of the grid for Saturday’s race behind title-chasing Lucas di Grassi (ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport). He was able to hold position behind the Brazilian until the round of pit stops, where he fell behind team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne. The team looked on course for a double podium, but the Frenchman came under attack from Sebastien Buemi (Renault e.dams) in the closing stages and mounted a tremendous defence to hold onto the final step of the rostrum.

Sunday was a bit of a trickier day for Sarrazin as a below-par qualifying saw the Frenchman line up ninth on the grid. His misery was compounded even further as he clashed wheels with Abt on the first corner and span the car en route to last in the field. What followed was a tremendous recovery drive as Sarrazin rose through the field and fought his way into eighth place, bringing home an extra four points for himself and the team.
