di Grassi expects tighter championship in season four

Lucas di Grassi believes the season four title will be decided by consistency rather than outright pace, due to the small performance margins between teams.

Speaking after the opening day of pre-season testing, the reigning champion goes into the season with #1 on his car and acknowledges that his title will be difficult to retain with the rate that the other teams are developing their own powertrains.

“[Having the #1] feels very good,” started di Grassi. “I thought about keeping the number but if we won the championship and #1 is available and nobody has ever used #1 in Formula E, why not use it and be the first time #1 is used? I’m very proud of it.

“It will be an extremely tough season, we’ve seen everybody’s very close together, a lot of teams within a few tenths. So I think the championship again will be won by who can be the most consistent all the time.

“A lot of the teams improved, each year is important. We did a big step I bet a lot of people also did a big step so we’re gonna see everyone pushing for the win every race and it’s gonna be very tight.”

The Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler driver also briefly weighed in on the chicane controversy which was brought about by multiple drivers tagging the narrow barriers, more notably Sam Bird who right rear section was destroyed following an impact.

“First, the chicane is not supposed to be there, second the way it was done. It’s not the standard that needs to be done or organised. So I think this chicane is just a big mistake to be where it is, the way it was done.”

The Brazilian set the third fastest time of the opening day at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit, behind Oliver Turvey and Sebastien Buemi
