Lynn encouraged by early testing progress

Alex Lynn is making his full-time debut in Formula E this season, having completed one event last season where he stepped in for the WEC-bound Jose Maria Lopez at the double-header New York ePrix.

Speaking on his first day in the office at pre-season testing, Lynn was pleased with the progress made by DS Virgin Racing and alluded to the team bonding of other new staff members within the team.

“It feels good, we had a really productive day,” said the 23-year-old. “[We put] many laps on the board and I think overall me and Sam [Bird] had a good day in general and a good day for the team. We have a few new recruits in the team, so we needed to start the learning progress with them and everything’s gone swimmingly. So yeah, positive!”

The Englishman added that the car felt good, along with some testing he’d done recently and that he was familiar with the track as he had driven it in the past albeit admitting that the circuit layout wasn’t the best.

“This hasn’t been my first day driving it this year with the testing we had recently but it feels good. It’s been a fantastic circuit when I’ve been driving here in Formula 3 and Formula Renault, the layout with Formula E isn’t the best but it is what it is and we’ve got to make do.”

The track’s layout featured a tricky chicane at the end of the lap, various drivers were struggling through it, many colliding with the wall, as Lynn’s team-mate Bird did and he added that he had a few problems with it but was lucky not to be collected by the barrier.

“I had a few problems of my own but luckily enough mine didn’t end in the barrier but at the end of the day I can see it can be easily done and I think there’s not one driver here that isn’t taking it as cautiously. There’s no prize for being quickest here but there’s also no prizes for making a mistake at the chicane.”

While too early to make any predictions, Lynn admitted that the circuit wasn’t going to be representative and that DS Virgin need to step up and fight for the top spot. The Englishman also said that he didn’t have any personal targets other than putting himself in a better situation than he was in New York last season, by learning as much as he can for Hong Kong.

“My honest expectations are we won’t learn anything truthful here purely because of the layout of the circuit. It’s very difficult to tell, you have the usual suspects of Renault, Audi, Mahindra and we need to fight for the top.

“I’m just trying to learn as much as I can by the time I get to Hong Kong, I want to have put myself in a much better position, purely on a learning basis than I did in New York.”
