Turvey aiming for maiden victory with better package

Oliver Turvey hopes to return to the podium and challenge for his first Formula E victory, with the NIO team making good progress in giving the Englishman a competitive car.

Turvey took his first series podium earlier this season in Mexico City and feels as though the results he has been achieving have been on merit, especially in qualifying where he is the only driver to have been in the top ten at every race so far.

Despite a few glitches in the earlier part of the season, he feels as though NIO are now in a place where they can challenge at the front.

“I’m happy with my performances and feel like I’ve been qualifying very consistently, been in the top ten in every qualifying session throughout the year, so we’ve been strong,” said the 31-year-old. “The races have been a lot better this year, we made a good step forward with the package we have and that’s shown in some of the races.

“Unfortunately we had some technical issues at the start of the year but we got our first podium in Mexico and we’ve been racing a lot better at the front, but we can still improve.

“Definitely I feel we are now able to race against the others, we scored some good points and could have had more without those technical issues in the first few races, but overall I’m quite pleased with the season, my performances and that we’ve been able to maximise the car in qualifying and a lot of the races.”

With the improved pace of the car and the first podium in the record books, the next aim for Turvey is to take his first Formula E victory, as well as consistently be at the front.

“That’s the aim! We want to be fighting for podiums every weekend and in Berlin we were fighting for the podium but just missed out. I want to be back on the podium and to try and get on the top step, we had the second place in Mexico but I definitely want to be challenging for victory.”

A historical weekend sees Switzerland host an officially-sanctioned race for the first time since 1954, an achievement to which Turvey gave high praise and hopes for an exciting race around what is set to be a challenging circuit to drive.

“It’s phenomenal, an amazing achievement by Formula E to have the first race in Switzerland for 64 years. It’s a fantastic location in the heart of the city next to an amazing lake and the track looks really challenging with some bumpy sections and some tight sections, two long straights and opportunities to overtake. It’s a great venue.

“It definitely will be challenging. Street circuits are always hard especially if it rains, but the forecast is improving so maybe we’ll get the traditional rain disappearing for Formula E weekends, but it looks challenging with all the different surfaces and tram lines.

“This is all the challenge of racing on the streets and that’s what I love about it, I’m sure it will be an exciting one.”
