Pits to fourth for Sarrazin in Putrajaya

A race that started with Venturi’s Stephane Sarrazin feeling a little awkward finished with his highest placing in Formula E to date. Sarrazin navigated an eventful race to finish fourth after starting from the pit lane, whilst teammate Jacques Villeneuve finished eleventh.

An amazing performance in qualifying put Sarrazin on the front row of the grid, alongside pole sitter Sebastien Buemi. But a lack of power on the starting grid made his race look hopeless. The Frenchman eventually got started, a lap behind the rest of the field, but accidents, temperature problems, and consumption issues for other drivers gave him the chance of a good finish.

“I had to begin the race in last position with no hope of a good outcome,” Sarrazin said. “But I knew I had to race like I always do – I never give up, and neither does the Venturi Team. It paid off because in the end I achieved my best result in Formula E history in position 4. Just unbelievable. It shows that we are a very competitive team. But being in position 2 on the grid and not being able to move, that’s an awkward feeling.”

Villeneuve started the race in twelfth and finished one place up in eleventh. The single free practice session earlier in the day was shortened for the Canadian whilst the team changed one of the engines. Villeneuve suffered from battery temperature problems, and his pit stop was longer than usual whilst his second car was unable to start.

“A lot of points were lost, but it’s clear that the cars are very competitive on the track,” Villeneuve said. “So far we haven’t been able to compete with 100% preparation.”

Venturi are still investigating what happened to Sarrazin’s car at the start of the race, but want to be at the forefront of the race in Punta del Este next month.
