Mixed fortunes for leaders Renault e.dams

As many drivers agree, Renault e.dams is the team to beat this season; however, the French squad did not have a very easy time in Buenos Aires, with both drivers encountering different tricky situations.

Both free practice sessions seemed hopeful for the team, especially FP2, when Sébastian Buemi topped the standings, and his team mate Nicolas Prost made it to the third position. In qualifying, however, luck tipped the scale in Prost’s favour. With both drivers in Group 2 of qualifying, the Frenchman could make it to Super Pole on his flying lap and eventually achieved a P2 start – his best one so far this season. Meanwhile, his team mate made a mistake at Turn 7, with Buemi’s car spinning and therefore starting the race from the last position on the grid.

The start looked promising for both of them, as Prost was pushing hard to overtake race leader Sam Bird, while Buemi had moved up an important number of places at the beginning of the race. The Swiss, who had an impressive pace, could finally finish second, and could have been the winner if not for encountering a race leader in Bird who had more battery remaining during the closing laps. On the other hand, Prost had struggles on the pitlane during the car change, and software issues also affected his car which pushed him down the standings.

“I was really happy with my pace earlier today; I was quick in practice and qualifying, so the result was really frustrating for me”, says a very disappointed Prost, who could not achieve a podium, as he did last year in Buenos Aires.

Buemi’s race, however, went from bad to good, as he says: “I’m really pleased with the result; I think that was probably one of my best races so far coming from the back to a podium”.

Both Senior Team Managers highlighted Sébastien’s efforts to make it to the points, and what is more, to score a podium. “Even starting from the back, we did think Sébastien could recover to a points-scoring finish. But he excelled himself with another podium and being so close to winning”, expressed Alain Prost. “I think the strength of our team, the drivers, and the car shone through in this race and we are very happy with the result”, Jean-Paul Driot told the press.

Renault e.dams leads both standings, with 101 points as a team, and Buemi having scored 80 points so far. “Perhaps we need to focus on our consistency in qualifying for the next race but, overall, we are really pleased with Sébastien and Nico’s results”, concludes Renault Sport Formula E Project Leader, Vincent Gaillardot.
