Prost tops second Punta del Este free practice

Nicolas Prost topped the final practice ahead of qualifying for the third round of the Formula E championship in Punta Del Este. The Frenchman had a clean session, ending up fastest by a slender margin from Lucas Di Grassi’s ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport machine.

With the track being situated right on the beach, drivers were forced to battle with a sandy circuit early on before the asphalt was cleaned. Sebastian Buemi was the first victim to the barriers lining the Punta Del Este circuit. The Swiss native suffered from broken suspension, prompting a full gearbox casing change.

Meanwhile, Bruno Senna was fighting the car hard, finding himself off the circuit in the process. Senna swiftly got out of his dead-end predicament and was back on his way. With 11 minutes of the session to go, Daniel Abt spun which brought out the red flag. Abt’s car returned to the pits under its own power, albeit missing a rear wing.

When cars were eventually able to take to the circuit once more, the final free practice two standings would be set. Aguri driver Felix Da Costa looked quick, but was quickly displaced by Buemi in his second car and championship leader Di Grassi. It was then Prost’s turn to do a lap which saw him go fastest, then Di Grassi went a mere 0.134 seconds slower. Prost time was never to be displaced, thus ending the session top in his Renault.

Elsewhere, it was not a good session for the two Mahindra cars. Bruno Senna and Oliver Rowland set times only good enough for 17th and 18th respectively and face an uphill battle in qualifying which takes place 12.00 local time.
