Mistakes and accidents for Venturi

It was a difficult weekend for Venturi, with one car ruled out of the race after an accident in qualifying and the other finishing ninth.

Jacques Villeneuve hadn’t been having a great day by the time qualifying came around, unable to get into the top ten in either of the free practice sessions. But being drawn in the fourth qualifying group would give him the cleanest track, with the sand that had been blown onto the track from the beach swept away by the first three groups.

Unfortunately, Villeneuve’s aggressive drive in qualifying didn’t pay off. The Canadian hit the wall at turn 17, destroying the suspension and cracking the chassis.

“I was braking and my front wheels were blocked, I was unable to control the car,” he said.

Venturi ruled that it wouldn’t be possible to fix the car and decided it was better for Villeneuve to focus on the Sunday testing, cancelling the Canadian’s race.

Stephane Sarrazin had also had a difficult qualifying session, but managed to get 13th position on the grid. Through the race, Sarrazin improved on that, overtaking a number of cars. After pitting, one of the first cars to do so, Sarrazin had gotten himself into the points. The Frenchman finished ninth.

“Today it has been really difficult for us, we had no speed, we made some mistakes with the set-up in qualifying and with our strategy during the race,” Sarrazin said. “We wanted to make a shorter first part and it didn’t work.”

Venturi are now focused on the Sunday test session, hoping to iron out their faults in order to improve in Buenos Aires.
