Nelson Piquet has been handed a 10-place grid penalty at the Long Beach ePrix for changing his electric motor for the second time this season.

The NEXTEV driver initially qualified in 15th place, meaning the full 10 places couldn’t be applied. This means he’ll be forced to wait an extra 10 seconds during his mandatory pit stop – extending the length of the stop from 67 seconds to 77 seconds.

Reigning champion Piquet Jr won the Long Beach ePrix last season – his first win in the category – on his way to the title. However he has scored only four points this season and lies in 15th place in the championship.

The race starts at 16:00 local time (midnight BST/1am CET).
