Abt proud of home result

Daniel Abt pleased his home fans with a strong race to finish second in the Berlin ePrix, placing ahead of team mate and championship leader Lucas di Grassi.

Abt was able to keep pace with pole sitter Jean-Eric Vergne and Sebastien Buemi in the opening laps, before losing ground to Buemi as the Swiss driver took the lead off Vergne.

Despite receiving a call from the ABT Schaeffler team to allow di Grassi through to aid his championship challenge, the 23 year old stayed ahead to consolidate his best ever Formula E result on the second step of the podium.

“Mega special!” was how Abt described the day. “Today has been absolutely stunning, the whole day has been nearly perfect. I could not ask for more and I’m so delighted for everyone who’s here supporting me, the German fans of course, my partners, my team, my friends, everyone. We are very happy and we’re going to celebrate tonight.”

He went on to explain how he was unable to allow di Grassi through in the closing stages, as he feared losing his podium position to a chasing Nico Prost.

“I backed off in the middle of the straight and I was pointing my finger out to indicate to him to go past, but it seems like he didn’t realise and stayed behind me. All the other parts [of the track] to let someone by are dangerous and then in the last lap I saw Prost close to him and I just could not take the risk to lose the podium here. I couldn’t do that so I stuck to my line.”

Despite being in contention for a podium throughout the race, Abt felt as though he would not have been able to challenge Buemi for the win even with the interruption of the safety car and the traffic he encountered.

“It’s tough to say, but Buemi was very quick today. I lost so much time behind Jean-Eric and then I again lost a lot of time behind guys who didn’t seem to know what blue flags mean. Prost managed to really close up because of the blue flags so I don’t think I was in a position to win today. You never know, but I’m happy with second.”

There was more good news for the young German this weekend as it was announced that he and di Grassi would continue with the team into season three, with Abt believing that consistency will be the key to challenging for the title.

“We’ve shown several times that we are strong but Lucas has been far more consistent this year. I have my moments but then I have races where I’m nowhere and I need to get rid of the nowhere races. I have to make sure we are consistently at the top and I’ve think I’ve proven I can do that and I’m looking forward to season three.”
