Venturi’s new technical director aims for successful start at Long Beach

Venturi left Long Beach last year with a single point as Stephane Sarrazin finished tenth. Now the team have a new Technical Director who wants to get off to a winning start, and a driver who has already tasted success at the American circuit.

[pullquote align=”left” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]“Long Beach holds a lot of great memories, all from my IndyCar days,” said Mike Conway, who won at Long Beach in April 2014. “My last win there was not so long ago. It’s a fun track, but is quite demanding.”[/pullquote]

With Conway coming from IndyCar, Luigi Mazzola, the new technical director, arrives from Formula one, where he worked for 20 years with Ferrari. He wants to bring the same success he saw at Ferrari – eight constructor world championships as technical director of the Test Team and 6 Driver World Championship as Test Team Manager – to Venturi.

“We need a positive and aggressive spirt and a good environment to win,” he said. “I want to have everybody looking at each detail. We have the skill and competence, now we have to be organized and focused in the same direction.”

Formula E holds different challenges to Formula One, though, and Mazzola has been watching them from an observing role on the team.

[pullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]“It’s a really demanding championship because it’s a one day event and you don’t really have time to work like you would like on the set-up,” he said. “Battery management is a true and key component of the race that you have to deeply understand. These cars are very difficult to drive and the street tracks are very challenging. Everything can be an issue.”[/pullquote]
